Drive Safely During Holidays In Ontario

Take additional care when driving in December to ensure your holidays are filled with only happiness and calm.

by Ultimate Drivers | 23 December 2022

Ontarians prepare for the holiday season each year in December by traveling more on icy roadways for holiday celebrations and to visit family and friends. The holiday season is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends, but it also brings with it more traffic on the roads, making it one of the busiest periods of the year for automobile accidents. Also, during holidays, a lot of people drive after drinking. In addition to overindulging in alcohol, they also neglect the risks associated with drunk driving.

A higher number of road accidents occur over the holidays every year.

So it’s important to take additional care when driving in December to ensure your holidays are filled with only happiness and calm.

Driving Tips During Holidays:
It’s possible that other drivers won’t act in the same way as you even if you drive sober and safely. Therefore, if driving during the holidays is unavoidable, make sure to drive while totally concentrated.

To help you drive safely on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, consider the following advice:

  • Don’t drive distracted: (Up to 80% of collisions are the result of inattentive driving. Most frequently, that refers to cell phone use-related distraction. Before pulling out of the driveway, program your GPS, and don’t try to answer any texts or calls. Before leaving your driveway, start your holiday playlist as well. Avoid adjusting the temperature or the music while you are actively driving).
  • Keep your car maintained (check your tires, car lights, and windshield wipers properly)
  • Due to the expected traffic congestion around the holidays, drive under the posted speed limit, don’t rush, and depart earlier than usual.
  • Prepare your route in advance (Even if you are familiar with the route, choose the safest route to your destination while keeping in mind the busiest routes during the holidays).
  • Check the weather before you leave the house and make travel plans appropriately.

Tips to Spot Drunk Drivers and Avoid Them:

Although you are eager to put the aforementioned driving advice into practice, you need to be ready in case you encounter a drunk driver on the road. Do your utmost to avoid a collision if you see a drunk driver.

The following traits will help you tell a drunk driver from a sober one:

  • Taking too long to react to stop signs or driving too slowly
  • Taking illegal turns.
  • Unreasonably making stops or driving on the wrong side of the road.
  • A car almost collides with something or another vehicle.
